Degree Programs
NC State University became the first American research university to offer masters-level curricula in services in its Colleges of Engineering and Management in fall 2006. The Master of Science in Computer Networking has added a Services Engineering concentration. The College of Management now has a Services Management concentration to its MBA program.
MSCN students concentrating in Services Engineering take a new services management course (jointly taught with MBA faculty), along with MBA courses in management of technology, managing people in the high-tech environment, and process analysis and design. For more information see the MSCN web site.
The Services Management concentration in the MBA teaches service management from an integrated viewpoint -- including operations, marketing, strategy, information technology and organizational issues -- with a focus on customer satisfaction. MBA Students will have the opportunity to choose between a Relationship Management track or an Innovation Management track.
Opportunities for Students
The marketplace is moving away from the traditional division of labor between technical and business specialists. Jobs that require only technical skills are being outsourced. M.B.A.s with general management training have become a commodity.
Students who complete one of the services programs at NC State will be in a much stronger position because they will be trained to do more complex, higher- valued work. Our graduates will be prepared to provide solutions to problems in a wide range of service activities, including customer service, government, information technology, transportation, and health care. They will work in teams that can simultaneously apply tools from business process analysis, marketing, computer science, operations research and organizational behavior to develop service solutions. These should be highly rewarding careers, in terms of both compensation and job satisfaction.
